Amsterdam’s history started when the city was founded in 1275. The 17th century is considered Amsterdam’s Golden Age. During this time Amsterdam was the center of a worldwide trading network which had Dutch ships sailing and ruling the oceans. It was then that the famous canal ring was built.

Amsterdam was the financial center of the world, most notably because of the invention of a stock exchange. This was done through the first company that ever issued stock, the Dutch East India Company in which Amsterdam was the dominant shareholder. Buildings from back then are still eveywhere in the city center.

The end of the 19th century is sometimes called Amsterdam’s second golden age. After years of decline the city regained a significant position in international trade. In 1928 the Olympic Games were held in Amsterdam. You can still visit the old stadium built for these games.

Amsterdam Sports History

Amsterdam has a strong sports tradition mainly in football. The best known Dutchman around the world is Johan Cruyff, a regular guy from Amsterdam who hasn’t changed a bit since he used to roam the city’s Eastside as a child. Other examples of famous Amsterdam football players are Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, Clarence Seedorf and Dennis Bergkamp.

Ajax Amsterdam is one of the few football clubs in Europe that won the Champions League four times or more. The club is known for its attractive offensive style and as inventor of the best youth academy in the world.
