Chinese New Year in Amsterdam

Chinese New Year in Amsterdam is a big happening and is known to attract many non Chinese as well. As every large Western metropolis, Amsterdam also has a section in the city called Chinatown. This neighborhood overlaps and borders the Red Light district and is situated around the Nieuwmarkt. There are a lot of Chinese restaurants, shops and a real Chinese temple. Even the plates with the street names are bilingual. It is a small but enticing area!

The highlight of Chinese New Year in Amsterdam are the festivities and parade. This year (2014 is the year of the Horse) Chinese New Year falls on the 31st of January. The festivities in Amsterdam will likely take place on the 1st of February. Expect a traditional Chinese New Year celebration with the usual firecrackers and Chinese dragons and lions.

Hosting a lot of the activities is the Fo Guang Shan temple. This buddhist temple is a unique feature in a North European city and always has a lot of special New Years things going on. This is also where the official celebrations will start. The Fo Guang Shan temple is located on the Zeedijk, surrounded by some of the best Chinese restaurants in the city.

Don’t forget to also visit the Sea Palace. This huge floating Chinese temple was the first of it’s kind and offers great food in a very Chinese environment. Sea Palace is located on the east of Central Station. More information on Sea Palace here.
