It’s little streets and canal ring give a real picturesque, yet relaxed feeling to Christmas in Amsterdam. Every year the city lights up from the typical light bulb strings on the canal bridges to the big Christmas tree on Dam square. Classical Christmas Music

In the month of December, the Royal Concertgebouw (“Concerthall”) in Amsterdam has Christmas as theme. Many international stars and orchestra’s come to Amsterdam to perform in the hall with one of the best acoustics in the world. Get tickets to the Concertgebouw here.

Other places where classical concerts will take place are the churches and Paradiso.

 

Ice Skating

There are skating rinks on Leidseplein and Museumplein. Especially the Leidseplein is beautiful during Christmas. There is a Christmas market around the skating rink where you can taste delicious Dutch snacks. The Museumplein offers it’s own unique scenery, skate right in front of the Rijksmuseum.

Dam Square periodically also has a skating rink and a Christmas market. To skate in between the New Church and the Royal Palace on Dam Square is truely a unique experience. When temperatures get real low you’ll even have the chance to skate on the canals. This happens every few years and is a large free folk fest.

Christmas Shopping in Amsterdam

When Amsterdam gets ready for Christmas, shopping plays a crucial role. Join the locals in the beautifully decorated department stores or shopping streets of Amsterdam. Go to the 9 Straatjes (“9 little streets”) in the western canal ring for small boutiques with a broad range of trendy and vintage items. If you’re into big brands don’t miss out on the PC Hooftstraat near Museumplein. This is the prime shopping street in The Netherlands for people who like to spend money. ¬†Bijenkorf on Dam Square, which is famous for it’s great Christmas decorations, also has all the big international shopping brands in house. Romantic Christmas in Amsterdam

Take one of the dinner cruises on the famous Amsterdam canal ring as one of the high points of your romantic Christmas in Amsterdam. But there is more. There are a lot of great wine bars and restaurants which will provide the right atmosphere for you and your partner. Start for example with a cocktail in the Sky Lounge at the DoubleTree hotel near Central Station. Then go to one of the relaxed yet excellent restaurants on the Nieuwmarkt. Wrap up the night at your discretion in one of Amsterdam’s many great luxury hotels.

Pink Christmas in Amsterdam

Pink ChristmasPink Christmas is an annual gay Christmas festival which takes place from the 19th until the 31st of December. It has many many different activities and events. The best known is the Christmas Fair on the Zeedijk. This large market is obviously around Christmas but also has special gay stalls. It’s an interesting collection of products and fun to stroll through even though you might not necessarily buy something.

The atmosphere is typical for Amsterdam, it’s a great mix of people from all kinds of backgrounds at the Pink Christmas Festival. This all comes together at Club AIR with the Pink Christmas Closing Party on new years eve.
