Amsterdam Gay Pride 2013

One of the largest Pride festivals in the world is Amsterdam Gay Pride 2013. Known for the unique Canal Parade, this is one of the most succesful gay prides around. Not surprising, given the tolerant nature of the city.

Amsterdam Gay Pride gets about half a million visitors from nearly every country in the world. It has been held isnce 1996. There is a large amount of social acceptance, the event is sponsored by ING Group, the largest financial institution in the world a few years back.

The Canal Parade takes place on the first saturday of August. It consists of a long line of boats with specific themes. Nearly every group in society, wether its professional, ethnic or sexual is represented in the parade. The route of the parade is Westerdok – Prinsengracht – Amstel river – Oudeschans – Oosterdok. The best spots are on the Prinsengracht near leidse- and rembrandtplein.

During the weekend of the parade there are many street parties. The center of the festivities is in the Rembrandtplein area.
